Sailing to Antarctica tells the inspiring story of how a bunch of retirees confidently sailed from Dublin to the Antarctic Peninsula on the adventure of a lifetime.
In 2004, with a crew of retired friends, the yacht Pure Magic, owned and skippered by Peter Killen, set sail for Antarctica.
Over eight months it called in to Spain, Portugal, the Canaries and the Cape Verdes, to Brazil and Argentina, before heading down south to the land of ice. In the Beagle Channel, originally explored by Captain Fitzroy and Charles Darwin, the crew prepared for crossing the notorious Drake Passage, a journey fraught with danger. Navigating through stormy weather and iceberg-laden seas, this 600-mile voyage took them to Deception Island in the Bransfield Strait – named for the Corkman who discovered Antarctica in 1820 – through the Gerlache Strait, and onto the Bismarck Strait – heading west past the American Antarctic Base on Anvers Island in the Bellingshausen Sea. Along the way they stopped at South Georgia to visit the grave of Shackleton, that extraordinary leader of men, before finally heading back to Dublin via Cape Town.

This is the story of the journey that brought him to the cold Southern Continent, on the first yacht to ever complete such a voyage from Ireland.
Joe Phelan had a successful career in the Irish Health Service as a medical laboratory scientist. Along the way, he established the Irish Kidney Transplant Laboratory Service and achieved founder member status of the British Transplantation Society. He retired in 2003 and sailed to Antarctica the following year. Joe is married to Trish and together they have three children and six grandchildren. They live in Sutton in Dublin, not far from Howth and still sail regularly.
Shipping Policy
Turnaround times for our personalised gift orders are 3-5-day business days (or as stated on the individual product information page or other published information) + delivery time.
Delivery is by courier or national carrier, who in the main provide exceptional service, however please be aware delays can occur and these are out of our control (force majure).
We have suppliers based in Mainland Europe, Ireland & UK who ship to to our customers worldwide* (* excludes large parcels, ball pits etc.).
UK sourced goods, marked as such in the product short description, are liable for VAT on entry to ROI / EU. These are shipped via Courier Tracked Service. The courier will contact you regarding payment of VAT and other fees.
Other products will say Ships From EU, Made In / Ships From Ireland etc. and do not attract additional charges in EU.
Prices do not include local taxes. You may be liable for local US Charges / EU VAT and other charges on delivery of certain orders at your individual location / delivery address.

Refund Policy
Products Purchased From ShopStreet.ie Vendors
Under Distance Selling Regulations, if you buy on-line or by phone, your consumer rights entitle you to a full refund if you request one in writing within 14 working days of receipt. This excludes the products listed as exceptions in the small print section*.
Your vendor can offer a refund on your purchase price within 14 days of receipt of the goods.
Your vendor will issue the refund within 14 Days of receipt of the return.
Purchaser is responsible for cost of returns postage.
Cancellation / Return / Exchange Policy
The process
- Contact vendor in normal working hours to be issued with returns number and appropriate returns address.
Registered Customers – Open a Support Ticket with your refund request in My Account -> Orders page. - Your vendor contact you to resolve any issues and in the case where issues are not resolved will issue this number within 2 working days by email. You may be asked for clear pictures of the packaging and product (including the SKU number) as part of the returns process from certain suppliers.
- Write returns number on the outside of the packaging (Mandatory), please use original packaging if possible and enclose original documentation received – write on the back the reason for the return (This is not mandatory). Please ensure you remove our labels from the packaging.
- Post the item to your vendor and obtain a proof of postage receipt. Sender is responsible for cost of returns postage.
- Your vendor will issue your refund within 14 days.
The small print – exceptions
It’s important that any unwanted item, unless faulty, is returned in a re-saleable condition. We’d expect this to mean that you’ve kept all original packaging and labels, and that it’s undamaged and unused.
Items purchased from UK
If you return item because you decline to pay fees due on order entry to EU we cannot refund UK shipping fee plus €10 admin charge.
Products you are unable to cancel, refund or exchange*
We cannot offer refunds or exchanges, unless faulty, on the following items:
- Products which have been personalised for you
- Products hand made to order for you
- Where a product has been specially ordered in for you (for example with custom ball colour combinations, etc), unless faulty, we’re unable to refund or offer an exchange.
- Vendors are unable to accept cancellations for these orders, unless within 24 hours of the order being placed.
- This does not affect your statutory rights.
