Their journey commenced with stops in Spain, Portugal, the Canary Islands, and the Cape Verde archipelago. From there, they ventured to the distant shores of Brazil and Argentina before turning southward, heading into the heart of the Antarctic realm.

As they navigated through the Beagle Channel, famously explored by Captain Fitzroy and Charles Darwin, the crew prepared themselves for the formidable challenge of crossing the treacherous Drake Passage. This 600-mile ordeal was fraught with peril as they battled stormy weather and treacherous iceberg-laden seas. Their perseverance brought them to Deception Island in the Bransfield Strait, named after an adventurous Corkman who discovered Antarctica in 1820.

Their voyage continued through the breathtaking Gerlache Strait and onto the formidable Bismarck Strait. Along the way, they made a poignant stop at South Georgia to pay their respects at the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton, a legendary Antarctic explorer and leader of men. Finally, their journey brought them full circle, returning to Dublin via Cape Town.

About the Author – Joe Phelan

Joe Phelan, the author of this gripping memoir, had a distinguished 40-year career in the Irish Health Service, where he made significant contributions as a medical laboratory scientist. Notably, he established the Irish Kidney Transplant Laboratory Service and earned the distinction of being a founder member of the British Transplantation Society.

While others might have opted for golf and leisure, Joe set his sights on sailing to Antarctica. His determination and passion led him to become a pivotal member of the first yacht crew to complete such a journey from Ireland.

Today, Joe Phelan resides in Sutton, Dublin, not far from the charming harbor town of Howth, where he and his wife Trish still embark on sailing adventures. They are proud parents of three children and doting grandparents to six grandchildren.
